about

This is an alternate version of 'Decaying Halo' from the album 'Asymmetric'

I originally intended to make a stripped down version but got carried away and found myself pulled in the opposite direction, leading to a more produced, more electronic re-creation of the song.

It features the original vocal recording with revamped drum production and new synth and bass sounds.

The conception of the idea, to uploading the master file spanned 2 days and never left my basement. The tug-of-war between getting a track to sound 'perfect' and actually finishing it (which ends up just being something of a decision) has always been a significant inhibitor for me.

This was an exercise (albeit extreme) in kicking my inner critic out momentarily for the sake of finishing something and moving on.

Lastly, hopefully I don't think the snares are too quiet in a few weeks.

Thanks for reading,
Louis

P.S. - about the lyrics

The phrase "decaying halo" represents a feeling of separation from a persistent adolescent idea that I should relentlessly prioritize others over myself. Although I have some suspicions, I am not totally sure what or who solidified this idea, but it always felt like there were only two options; selfishness (which is made out to be inherently evil) or back-seating myself. As we age (I’m slowly learning) that the importance of prioritizing ourselves presents a unique challenge to those of us who, for whatever reasons, interpreted this issue as binary. If/when we are able to choose our own side, it is often accompanied by any combination of guilt/discomfort/uncertainty. But the cost of not doing so can paralyze our personal growth. So this is my invitation to myself (and anyone else who needs it) to choose my own side, and encouragement to myself that I am not evil for it.

lyrics

Oh, you will fall where you carry your lies
As you torch all your places to hide
And you know your quicksand
Will gladly adopt you
My friend, you're not seeing clearly again

My decaying halo now has more than one hole
And it's getting thinner as I speak
My decaying halo now has more than one hole
And it's getting thinner as I breathe

Oh, what's the point of our meager divides
We're all on the same side of the sky
When we wield our pride
We're protecting no one
My friends, we're not seeing clearly again

Can I trust the impulses that I feel
Deploy my agents just to verify
Not another case of brain betrayal
Firing upon me like a blood-hungry army
'Til those agents revolt and go rogue, like before
Now I'm stuck at square one
Here without even a hunch
When it comes to what I can trust
With my own body revolting
Frozen, uncertain impulses on my

Tidy up your bonds
Tourniquet the sources of any bad blood
Any bad blood

Tidy up your bonds
Tourniquet the sources of any bad blood
Any bad blood

My decaying halo now has more than one hole
And it's getting thinner as I speak
My decaying halo now has more than one hole
And it's getting thinner as I breathe

Oh, you will fall where you carry your lies
As you torch all your places to hide
And you know your quicksand
Will gladly adopt you
My friend, you're not seeing clearly again

Oh, what's the point of our meager divides
We're all on the same side of the sky
When we wield our pride
We're protecting no one
My friends, we're not seeing clearly again

about

Fifth Lucky Dragon Indianapolis, Indiana

Most of these songs explore how our fantasies interact with real life, what the future will look & feel like for both the individual and collective, and how the internet affects our psychology. My goal is for these songs to be enjoyable even if you don’t want to hear my thoughts on those topics, so I try to create appealing instrumentals and melodies to wrap the words in.
